Exercise and education program helps patients suffering with Osteoarthritis.
The team at Brunswick Private Hospital are proud to be offering the GLA:D® program. GLA:D®, Good Life with osteoArthritis: Denmark, is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms.
Research from the GLA:D® program in Australia shows an average pain reduction of 36%, reduced analgesic consumption, reduction in perceived need for surgery, and clinically meaningful improvement in joint confidence.
The GLA:D® program can only be delivered by accredited physiotherapists who have undertaken the training at La Trobe University. One of Brunswick Private Hospital‘s Physiotherapists, Paula O’Neill, has recently gained a PhD scholarship from La Trobe University, on Reducing Inappropriate Surgery of the Knee, which aims to result in improved outcomes for patients with osteoarthritis of the knees.
Paula is pleased to provide education and therapy to patients experiencing pain due to osteoarthritis. “GLA:D® education and exercises can be applied to everyday activities, ensuring participants develop skills to manage their osteoarthritis. By strengthening and improving confidence with exercise, participants develop better capacity to become or stay active, prevent symptom progression and reduce pain.”
One patient already experiencing the benefits from the program is Deb. Deb started the GLA:D® program at Brunswick Private Hospital in May this year following a left-side hip and knee replacement. As Deb was experiencing severe arthritis in her right knee she was the perfect GLA:D® candidate.
Deb was feeling unmotivated in her post-operative rehab, she was having problems strengthening her knee and access issues due to COVID were slowing her progress.
“Finding GLA:D® at Brunswick Private Hospital has helped me get back on track with my rehabilitation. Starting the GLA:D® program has given me motivation and I’ve now gained strength in my knee. My knee with severe arthritis has greatly benefited from the program.”
“Paula is a knowledgeable GLA:D® instructor, who is really supportive and compassionate. The GLA:D® program is the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Well done Deb! The team at Brunswick Private Hospital congratulate you on your hard work and recovery.
