When Standard Treatments Haven’t Helped

Living with depression or another mood disorder can be exhausting, especially when you’ve tried multiple treatments and still don’t feel the improvement you hoped for. Many people find themselves in this position — doing everything asked of them, attending appointments, taking medication as prescribed, engaging in therapy — yet still feeling stuck.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And it’s not a sign of failure. Some conditions simply require different or additional approaches.

When symptoms persist, it’s okay to look for another pathway

For some people, symptoms continue despite standard treatments. This is sometimes referred to as Treatment‑Resistant Depression (TRD), though similar challenges can occur with other mood disorders as well. It can be disheartening, and many people describe feeling unsure about what to try next.

What matters most is knowing that there are further options available — options that are grounded in clinical evidence and delivered in a supervised medical setting.

A new service designed for people who need additional support

Brunswick Private Hospital is introducing a new service for individuals experiencing Treatment‑Resistant Depression and certain other mood disorders where additional interventions may be appropriate.

This service includes access to:

  • Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) – a non‑invasive neurostimulation technique delivered by trained clinicians
  • Esketamine (PBS‑listed) – available for eligible patients in a controlled clinical environment
  • Intravenous Ketamine treatment – provided within a structured and closely monitored program

These treatments are not first‑line therapies, but they may be considered when standard approaches haven’t provided enough relief. Every patient undergoes a thorough assessment to determine whether these options are suitable for their individual circumstances.

Working alongside your existing care

This new service is designed to complement — not replace — the care you already receive. Your GP and any mental health professionals you see remain central to your treatment. Brunswick Private Hospital works collaboratively with your existing team to ensure continuity, safety, and coordinated support.

If you’re wondering about next steps

If you feel you’ve reached a point where standard treatments haven’t helped enough, speaking with your GP is an important first step. They can discuss whether a referral to Brunswick Private Hospital’s new program may be appropriate for you.

You deserve care that takes your experience seriously and offers pathways that match your needs. Exploring additional options is a proactive and valid part of managing your mental health.
